 John Rylands Library

Built in the 1890s, the John Rylands Library is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world, both the building and its collections are of outstanding international significance.

The John Rylands University Library's Special Collections contain some of the most significant books and manuscripts ever produced together with extensive, rich and valuable archive collections and visual resources. Increasingly these incredible materials are also available digitally. Together they form a research library of world renown.

The John Rylands University Library holds one of the largest assemblies of Special Collections material in Britain, occupying approximately 20,000 metres of shelving.

In addition to providing research and study facilities, The John Rylands Library is a popular visitor attraction.

MuCEM

MuCEM (Musée des civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée) will be launched in 2013 in Marseille, the year the city will be European Capital of Culture. MuCEM will be the first museum in the world dedicated to the cultures of the Mediterranean, and with a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, it will offer a fresh perspective on Mediterranean cultures.

The institution will be split across three sites:

  • Two for exhibition activities, centralised around Fort Saint-Jean (historical monument dating from the twelfth century, its construction was finished during the reign of Louis XIV) and Pier J4 (where a new building will be built).
  • The Centre of Conservation and Resources (CCR) at Belle de Mai, which will be used for conservation and documentation. It will be open to the public, and should allow maximum and easy access to the collections and information.

Chatsworth House Trust

Chatsworth House is a stately home in North Derbyshire, England. It is the seat of the Duke of Devonshire, and has been home to his family, the Cavendish family, since Bess of Hardwick settled at Chatsworth in 1549. The Devonshire Collection is a record of one family's eclectic tastes and interests over sixteen generations and includes Elizabethan needlework to Enlightenment scientific instruments, Old Master drawings to 21st century sculpture. The Chatsworth House Library is said to be one of the greatest private libraries in the world, comprising over 30,000 books, including printed books from the past six centuries, fine bindings and illuminated manuscripts. Collected over many generations, they were brought together at Chatsworth in the early 19th century from the family’s various houses.

The Virtual Museum of Writing (VMoW) is focused on matters central to the historical and theoretical understanding of writing from its invention to the present. The VMoW showcases materials from the Museum of Writing housed at the Senate House Library at the University of London. The online environment will provide interpretative exhibits and an interface for browsing the Museum’s collections as digital images and descriptive records while pointing to the existence of the analogue artifacts available for more advanced research.

The Museum’s mission extends to the history of books, scripts, notation systems, and materials for their production. Its research and educational mission also includes attention to basic questions of literacy and communication in their many cultural dimensions.

The Museum of Writing is supported by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, and by the University of California, Los Angeles.
