Te Papa is New Zealand's national museum and is founded on the concepts of unified collections, the narratives of culture and place, the idea of forum, the bicultural partnership between tangata whenua (Maori) and tangata tiriti, and a multidisciplinary approach to delivering a national museum for diverse audiences. Its mission is to be a forum for the nation to explore and preserve New Zealand's unique cultural and natural heritage.
Central to Te Papa's existence are its collections, which span across five main areas: Art and Visual Culture, Natural History, New Zealand History and Heritage, Pacific, and Taonga Mäori (Maori treasures). Te Papa has particularly rich collections of New Zealand plants and animals, taonga Mäori, and Pacific material. Te Papa has the largest Crustacea collection in New Zealand and the largest New Zealand region Fishes collection in the world.
